Called to Serve

Dan McCready is a Marine Corps veteran, small business owner, husband, and father of four. Dan’s running for U.S. Congress as a Democrat in North Carolina’s 9th District. After his opponent’s campaign committed election fraud in last November’s election, a re-do special election is being held on September 10. Dan’s running for Congress to put country over party and lower healthcare and prescription drug costs, cut middle class taxes, and strengthen public schools.

Dan first felt called to serve our country after 9/11. Dan grew up going to Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools and earned his Eagle Scout at Carmel Presbyterian Church. Dan felt he had been given a lot and wanted to give something back, so he joined the Marines after 9/11. He led 65 Marines in the 2007 Iraq surge. While in Iraq, Dan found another calling. His fellow service members helped him find his Christian faith that guides him today, and Dan was baptized in water from the Euphrates river. He went on to be honorably discharged as a Captain.

Dan returned home to start a family and a small business. After graduating from Harvard Business School, Dan started a solar energy business in Charlotte with another Marine. He helped build 36 solar farms throughout North Carolina that put 700 North Carolinians to work in good-paying jobs. Dan played a key role in North Carolina becoming second in the nation for solar power, and today North Carolina supports over 30,000 clean energy jobs. Dan’s commitment to creating American jobs doesn’t end with clean energy. Witnessing the loss of mom-and-pop shops to big box stores, Dan founded another company, a retailer called This Land, that sold exclusively American-made goods and supported the livelihoods of 50 American craftsmen.

Now Dan feels called to serve us again. Dan was more than happy to keep building his business and spending time with his four kids and his wife, Laura, a children’s attorney. But like you, he sees politicians who are so concerned with partisan games, they’ve forgotten who they are supposed to serve. They put partisanship before people and special interests before families. Dan’s fighting to put country over party because we deserve better.

When I built a business or served in the Marines, we never cared if you were a Democrat or a Republican. We cared about getting the job done. It’s time we had new leaders who put country over party – and got the job done for North Carolina families.

In the association health plans State Senator Bishop pushed through the legislature this week, insurance companies don't have to cover "essential health benefits" like prescription drugs. They have to take people with pre-existing conditions, but can refuse to pay for their medication.

So, if you have heart disease, you could be on your own for heart medication. If you have high blood pressure, you could be on your own for blood pressure medication. Dan Bishop’s plans deny coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. #nc09

It was packed at our Town Hall on education this week. We talked about the need to raise teacher pay and invest in CMS schools. I was thrilled to be joined by some of the amazing teachers who taught me at Sharon Elementary and Myers Park. Election Day is September 10, and our schools are on the ballot. Be sure to vote! ... A teacher shapes the life of her children just as parents do. When a child gets to learn from an amazing teacher, it’s a blessing. I was so happy to see Chris Williams, my amazing 6th grade teacher, at our Town Hall last night. I still have such great memories from her class at Sharon Elementary — though she had to put up with a student who wasn’t always the easiest! 😀 ... See MoreSee Less
